Chronic Pain and Acupuncture
Acupuncture can provide significant relief from pain. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine treatment that relies on the strategic placement of tiny needles into the meridians that span the body from head to toe. The needles are used to stimulate certain key "points" the flow of “qi” throughout the body. This eastern medicine approach, while not generally understood by the western medical world has been shown to be a safe and very effective treatment for chronic pain.
How Does it Work?
Acupuncture has a variety of effects on the body.
Decreases Pain Signals
Reduces inflammation
Promotes blood flow
Stimulates healing and regrowth of tissue
Releases natural painkillers
Relaxes muscle spasms and shortened muscles
Decreases Stress to promote tissue repair
How Often is Acupuncture Needed?
Plan on weekly treatments until you start to see a benefit, then gradually lengthen the time until the next visit.
What Does it Feel Like?
Typically the points are painless, however sometimes there may be a sensation of a “pinch” during insertion, but it does not last long. In some cases electricity (called electro-acupuncture) may be applied to the needles to make it more effective. Once the needles are in place, the patient rests for several minutes. Often you will relieve feeling very relaxed.
